In a bid to alleviate the economic burden on Nigerian citizens caused by soaring food prices, the federal government has introduced a 50% subsidy on rice. This initiative aims to provide relief to households struggling with the rising cost of living.
Information Minister, Mohammed Idris, announced the subsidy program following a Federal Executive Council meeting. He emphasised the government’s concern about the hardships faced by citizens and its commitment to finding solutions. The announcement comes amid growing public discontent over food insecurity and economic challenges.
Distribution and concerns
Although the government has confirmed the allocation of subsidised rice to various centers across the country, specific details about the distribution points remain unclear. The rice is reportedly being sold at ₦40,000 per bag. This marks a significant reduction from the market price, which hovers around ₦80,000 to ₦90,000 per 50kg bag.
However, despite the government’s assurances, concerns have been raised about the potential for mismanagement and exploitation of the subsidy program. Some critics argue that the initiative may not reach the intended beneficiaries. Some have expressed worry over unscrupulous individuals potentially profiting from the discounted rice.
Commodities trader Chijioke Obiwuru expressed skepticism about the availability of the subsidised rice, while Marian Chikwelu called for transparency in the distribution process to prevent mismanagement.
“We don’t even know where this rice is being sold for now”, Mr. Obiwuru stated. He also expressed fears that the initiative could be subverted by unscrupulous businessman, who may re-bag the product and sell at normal price to the unsuspecting public.
Also, Miss Chikwelu stated: “I just hope that the process is transparent. We are tired of the suffering and some people playing politics with this gesture. Let it be made available and accessible, so that it can reach the desired target.”
Addressing criticisms
Meantime, the information minister acknowledged the limitations of the initial supply and assured the public that the government is working to increase the quantity of subsidised rice available.
“This rice has been taken to various centers across all the states of the federation, and is being sold at 40,000. Centers have been created so that those who need this rice can go there and buy it,” he assured.
He emphasised that the current distribution is a first step in addressing the food crisis.
“In the first instance, about 10 trucks have been made available to each of the stats and indeed this is just the beginning, I know that some of the comments you hear are that it is never enough. The government has never pretended that these supplies are indeed enough. But these are necessary first steps.”
Meanwhile, other interventions include the release of 42,000MT of grains, and a 150-day duty free import window for food commodities.
Essentially, the subsidy program comes amidst record-high food inflation in Nigeria. The price of rice, a staple food for many Nigerians, has surged, making it increasingly unaffordable for many households.
By reducing the cost of rice, the government hopes to ease the financial strain on citizens. This is in a bid to avert a potentially riotous situation while also improving overall well-being of citizens.
