USDA allocates $300 million to boost agriculture exports through market diversification and enhancing competitiveness.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack recently announced the allocation of $300 million to 66 US organisations, to diversify export markets for American agriculture. This initiative, known as the Regional Agricultural Promotion Program (RAPP), seeks to bolster demand for American food and farm exports in promising markets worldwide.

Launched in October 2023, RAPP is part of a broader effort to expand beyond traditional markets and tap into regions with burgeoning consumer demand. By directing resources towards areas like Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia, where purchasing power is on the rise, the program aims to create new opportunities for local US producers and agribusinesses.

The funding provided will enable exporters to establish a foothold in diverse and dynamic markets, enhancing their competitiveness and resilience in an ever-changing global trade landscape. With the potential for growth abroad, these investments play a vital role in reversing the decline of small and mid-sized farms while fostering economic prosperity in rural communities.

Recipient organisations are set to undertake a range of projects to capitalise on emerging export opportunities. Below are some of the beneficiaries and what they aim to acheive:

  • The Cranberry Institute plans to target export prospects in India, Brazil, Colombia, and Southeast Asia through trade education seminars and consumer-focused activities.
  • The Southern Forest Products Association aims to tap into new markets for Southern yellow pine products in the Caribbean region, utilising educational seminars and promotional events.
  • The US Dairy Export Council will expand its presence in Africa by navigating dairy import regulations and regulatory frameworks.
  • The US Meat Export Federation is eyeing new markets in the ASEAN region and Africa while investing in the convenience store segment in select countries.
  • The Brewers Association will seize opportunities in the craft beer scene in Southeast Asia, participating in brewing trade shows and facilitating buyer exchanges.
