Former Nigerian president, Olusegun Obasanjo’s Presidential Library (OOPL) has announced plans to train 200 youths in cassava farming. This initiative is part of a broader effort to promote food security, self-employment, and sustainable agriculture, aligning with global trends to empower young people in the agricultural sector.

Cassava is vital for food security in many parts of the world, especially in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Known for its resilience to harsh climates and ability to grow in poor soils, the root crop provides essential carbohydrates to millions of people globally. Training youths in cassava farming equip them with skills to produce a crop that not only supports local food systems but also contributes to global food security.

Empowering youths for sustainable agriculture

The training program, led by the Youth Development Centre, includes providing land, supervision, and resources to the participating youths. This approach ensures that they become self-reliant farmers, reducing unemployment and contributing to the agricultural sector. As global concerns about food security rise, such initiatives are crucial for empowering the next generation of farmers.

The program was announced during the 2024 International Youth Day celebration, themed From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development. The event highlighted the need for youths to embrace agriculture as a means to combat hunger and ensure food security, particularly in Nigeria, where food scarcity remains a challenge.

Dr. Bisi Kolapo, Chairperson of the Youth Development Centre, urged youths to take inspiration from Obasanjo’s life, emphasising that agricultural engagement is vital for tackling hunger. The initiative reflects a growing global recognition that local farming practices, such as cassava cultivation, can play a significant role in ensuring food availability and supporting economic stability.

Integrating digital tools in agriculture

In line with the International Youth Day theme, Omolara Kehinde, the Program Manager at OOPL, stressed the importance of using digital platforms to enhance agricultural productivity. Digital tools can revolutionise farming practices by providing access to real-time information, improving crop management, and connecting farmers with markets. This digital integration is essential for modernising agriculture and making it more attractive to the younger generation.

The event also addressed the critical issue of climate change, which poses a significant threat to global agriculture. Speakers emphasised the need for sustainable farming practices and environmental stewardship to mitigate the effects of climate change. Mrs. Temilade Kilaso and Adekemi Adeoye highlighted the importance of adopting green skills, such as sustainable farming techniques and renewable energy use, to ensure a resilient agricultural sector.
